Numerous news reports have highlighted huge upticks in global tourism to the Arctic and Antarctic, and China is no exception to this trend. This year, data from various tourism companies shows that the number of offerings in these fields has increased as has the number of tourists, the majority of whom are wealthier middle-aged and elderly tourists from first-tier cities.
According to data from Ctrip, the number of visitors who viewed its aurora tours on the platform increased threefold last year relative to 2015, and more than doubled again this year compared to last. The number of those booking such tours has increased by more than 200% this year. Meanwhile, Lvmama’s data shows the number of tourists booking such tours through its platform rising by around 150% annually for the past few years.
