WeChat has driven information consumption of 174.3 billion yuan (US$25.3 bn) in 2016, an increase of 26.2%. It accounted for 4.54% of total information consumption in 2016.
China’s total consumption of information is about 3.8 trillion yuan (US$552 bn) and expected to reach 6 trillion yuan (US$872 bn) in 2020 according to Tencent. China’s per capita consumption of information is only US$300, less than one-tenth of the United States.
WeChat has driven 158.7 billion yuan (US$23.06 bn) consumption on mobile data in 2017, an increase of 26.6%。Over 50% users’ mobile data usage accounts for over 30% of total monthly data usage.
WeChat increased users’ spending on WeChat Games and emoji by the original content protection, interactive sharing, and upgraded service experience. The total information consumption on WeChat Official Accounts totaled 5.63 billion yuan with an increase of 20.4%.
WeChat led the traditional consumption of 273.2 billion yuan with WeChat ecosystem connecting entertainment, transportation, and travel bookings.
The WeChat economy generated 18.81 million jobs in 2016, an increase of 7.7% and including the direct employment of 4.66 million (+6.2%). The indirect employment driven by WeChat saw 14.15 million jobs in 2016, an increase of 8.2%.
