Double 11 (11 Nov; also called Singles’ Day) is China’s largest online shopping festival in China. At 12pm today, Tmall Double 11 sales had reached RMB 80.7 billion (USD 11.85 billion).

Alibaba is trying to change the way people shop; this year, its VR application Buy+ got its test run on Double 11 shopping festival.
Many merchants have been using Alibaba’s live-streaming capabilities this year to introduce their brands to consumers and get customer feedback in real time. Ahead of this year’s Double 11 sale, Alibaba worked with 80,000 physical shops to help them establish digital connections to better serve customers through membership programs, to deliver more services, and to more efficiently allocate inventory.

This year, it takes Tmall less than 7 minutes to reach RMB 10 billion in sales while it took 12 minutes and 28 seconds to reach the same level of sales in 2015.
At 24:00:00, the whole day Tmall GMV reached 120.7 billion yuan (US$17.79 bn) with an increase of 32% YoY, covering 235 countries; mobile accounted for 81.87%. The first order on Tmall Double 11 2016 was received after 13 minutes.
Alibaba’s Double 11 online shopping festival in 2016 saw RMB 98.97 billion ($14.6 billion) in GMV generated on mobile devices and 657 million delivery orders, compared with $9.8 billion and 467 million, respectively, in 2015. There were also 1.04 billion payment transactions processed compared with 710 million last year.

Automobiles have also become hot commodities during the sale, which this year generated total transactions worth $17.8 billion.
Aliyun, Alibaba’s cloud computing company, exceeded total sales of 190 million yuan on Double 11 2016.
Costco was the top seller on Singles Day this year on Tmall Global. The U.S. retailer sold about 20 million yuan ($3.14 million) worth of products in one hour.
China’s online shopping users are expected to reach 891 million by 2020 2.1 times that of 2015 and the total e-commerce market is predicted reach 13.91 trillion yuan (US$2.17 trillion) accounting for 26.7% of total retail sales according to Kantar Retail.
