China users in 21 to 29 age group from the first-tier and the second-tier cities are the main mobile payment users, accounting for 43%, followed by users in 30 to 39 age group (30%) according to eMarketer.
Most mobile payment users use WeChat and Alipay. 60% respondents use Alipay to pay for daily bills, while 17% respondents use WeChat. 56% respondents use Alipay to pay for financial business; only 14% use WeChat.
Alipay has developed its payment market for many years and the data in 2013 shows that 77.9% of mobile payment users considered Alipay very safe and only 1.6% of them showed worries in safety.
While only 37.6% of mobile payment users considered WeChat payment very safe which indicates WeChat’s powerful social features can also be concerns of payment safety.
However, WeChat beat Alipay in P2P transfer for its frequently usage rate. 35% respondents claim they have used mobile e-commerce payment, only 10% respondents just start using mobile payment for P2P transfer.
Although mobile payment is becoming a trend, it is somewhat popular in the first and the second-tier cities for now.
