Mobile payment is growing more and more popular as mobile internet and e-commerce developed, but mobile users needed to be guided and their mobile habits needed to be cultivated. Alipay, the largest mobile payment platform in the world, and Wechat payment are now most popular among China mobile payment users.
In 2013, 81.1% of China mobile payment users were between 18 and 35 years old. Male users accounted for 67.8% which had a decrease from prior year. China male mobile payment users had strong purchasing power which were major group among all users in 2013.
Mobile payment users who were from east China accounted for 27.2%, ranking top region in 2013, followed by north China and south China according to iResearch. Mobile payment users’ geographic distribution in China indicated the development level of different parts of China. Mobile payment users in Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang province accounted for major part in east China. It is still a long way to go for mobile payment to make efforts in less developed areas in China.
China mobile payment users whose income between 3,000 and 5,000 yuan accounted for 36.9% of total users in 2014.
61.7% respondents had bachelor’s degree in 2014 which were major group in mobile payment users.
The top 3 usage of China mobile payment were online shopping, money transfer and credit card payment in 2013. Mobile payment’s convenience and efficiency can be more obvious in local life. It is estimated that new usage in mobile payment can be great opportunities for future mobile payment market.
For mobile payment usage, female users were 6.7% higher than male ones in online shopping, and 4.6% higher than male ones in credit card payment while male users were 6.7% higher than female ones in buying lottery in 2013.
In 2013, users who use mobile payment for 1 to 2 times a month accounted for 28.3%. And users who were younger and the higher the use frequency was.
44.2% of mobile payment users favored convenience of usage and 40.4% of them favor convenient and high efficiency of service in 2013.
In 2013, 46.7% mobile payment users preferred mobile payment apps when choosing methods of mobile payment, followed by NFC payment and Wechat payment.
62.4% of mobile payment users considered payment safety the major issue and it is expected to be solved in the future. It is estimated that mobile payment will be featured with less cost, high service quality and high safety.
70% of Wechat payment users were male ones. Wechat payment is discussing cooperation with some e-commerce websites on importing business and overseas e-commerce including eBay.
In 2013, Wechat payment users and Alipay wallet users were mainly in east China, north China and central China. Alipay Wallet, being added with features beyond payment, is making efforts on future hospital, business circle and future transportation, which can bring revolutionary change to daily life.
Alipay wallet (its original name is Alipay) has developed for many years and 77.9% of mobile payment users considered it very safe and only 1.6% of them showed worries in safety. While only 37.6% of mobile payment users considered Wechat payment very safe which indicates Wechat’s powerful social features can also bring worries for concern about payment safety.
