Besides setting up a Wechat official account, many businesses in China set up personal Wechat account for business purpose.
Tencent closed personal accounts who had more than 20,000 friends some time ago and just decreased the limit to 5,000 this week, discouraging the use of personal account for business purposes.
This means, personal account will no longer be able to add more than 5,000 friends. If any account has more than 5,000 friends already, the message posting on Wechat Moments will only be “seen” by randomly selected 5,000 friends.
According to insider news, Tencent will be reviewing and cracking down some inappropriate personal and public accounts.
5,000 is more than enough for personal use. QQ messenger and Weibo allows up to 2,000 friends. It’s possible Wechat lower this limit in future and allow higher limit for paid members.
